Student Progress toward Goals: District Goal 1: Student Achievement:

GUSD continues to make progress toward meeting District Goals and Strategic Initiatives with Penelope DeLeon Superintendent, at the helm. Goal One: Student Achievement states specifically: prepare students for Career and College readiness, ensuring that every student is challenged to successfully access rigorous curricula and 21st Century learning strategies that lead to tangible post-secondary outcomes.

This week’s progress update is connected to Strategic Initiative 1.3:  Provide a coherent, Multi-Tiered System of Support that focuses on academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success for all students, including English Learners, students with disabilities, socio-economically disadvantaged students, gifted and talented and other targeted subgroups to close the achievement, opportunity, and access gaps to meet high expectations.

On Thursday evening, March 24, GUSD’s Community Committee on Ethnic Studies met for the first time to begin their study of the course content. Every applicant who applied and interviewed was placed on the committee.

Penelope DeLeon Superintendent, is taking a unique approach to the requirements of California Assembly Bill (AB) 101 and the adoption of an Ethnic Studies Graduation Requirement, engaging the community in a study of the course content. A high school and middle school student committee will meet next, and teacher committees will begin after that.  Each of these groups is part of the District’s preparation to offer an Ethnic Studies course meeting a high school graduation requirement by 2025-2026.
